Friday, 22nd of November / 3pm : ‘Alpha’ with Ed Jackson and Coldhouse Collective – Presented by Berghaus – Brewery Arts – Theatre
Human beings are narrative creatures, and over the course of our lives we create an ‘identity’ that gives us a reason to be. Adventure is an ancient and primal pursuit that has given humans a reason to boldly step out of the security of their known world in search of the far reaches. So what happens when a man with a defined purpose and identity has everything stripped away from him in an instant?
Alpha follows three young men with life changing spinal cord injuries as they make an attempt to cross Vatnajokull, the largest ice cap in Western Europe. Linked together by a single rope and without any support or guidance, they embark on the journey as a united team.
One was an adventurer, one a professional rugby player, and one a soldier and a mountaineer. As they travel across this unforgiving land we are offered an insight into their individual stories, and we explore what it is to be ‘a man’ in the modern world.
Each of these men have had everything that gave them purpose and meaning taken away from them. Each of them faced the possibility that everything they’d ever dreamt of having was going to be gone forever. But, in their own unique way, each of them recovered. Not physically, perhaps, but that is what makes these young men so fascinating. Who were they before their accidents? What happened to them? Who are they now and how have their injuries shaped the course of their lives?
Watch this incredible film, plus enjoy a live panel discussion with Ed Jackson, Darren Edwards and Niall McCann

Starting and finishing just outside Basecamp in the Abbot Hall area (just look for the Hiked Up flag), the hike will follow the Natland Circular trail, focusing on the mental wellbeing that the outdoors can provide, with M2M helping to facilitate this through breathwork exercises and pauses along the route. Members of the Berghaus and 360 Expeditions teams will also take part in the walk, which will take in the beautiful landscape around Kendal before returning to the town at around 11:30am. The community hike is free to join and tickets are available now via the festival website.
We have selected an easy-going route, but please do bring appropriate footwear & clothing, and don’t forget to pack water & snacks for the journey. We may encounter livestock so leads are advised if you wish to bring four-legged friends.
